RESONATORS ARE A SUBCLASS OF MUFFLERS, AND ARE TYPICALLY FOCUSED MORE ON REMOVING THE HIGH PITCH NOTES FROM THE EXHAUST WHILE NOT REDUCING THE TOTAL VOLUME.
RESONATORS WILL STILL LOWER THE MAXIMUM DECIBEL OUTPUT, BUT THE SOUND OF THE ENGINE WILL BE DEEPER AND BE LESS HARSH ON THE EARS.
HOW ARE RESONATORS DESIGNED?
TYPICAL DESIGN OF A RESONATOR WILL BE A STRAIGHT, PERFORATED TUBE GOING THROUGH THE CENTER AS THE MAIN ROUTE.
THE PERFORATIONS IN THIS TUBE ALLOW DIFFERENT SOUND WAVES TO PASS THROUGH AND INTO THE LARGER EXTERIOR PIPE, WHERE IT THEN TRAPS AND DEMINISHES THE HIGH FREQUENCY SOUND WAVES.
WHAT MATERIALS ARE RESONATORS MADE FROM?
RESONATORS ARE USUALLY MADE FROM A STEEL-ALLOY, USUALLY IN THE STAINLESS STEEL CATEGORY.
SOMETIMES TO INCREASE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE RESONATOR, THE SPACE BETWEEN THE PERFORATED PIPE AND OUTER PIPE WILL BE FILLED WITH FIBERGLASS OR OTHER SOUND ABSORBING MATERIALS.
HIGHER QUALITY RESONATORS WILL FLOW BETTER AND REMOVE MORE HARSH SOUNDS THAN CHEAPER MODELS, BUT ANY RESONATOR CAN SUBSTANTIALLY IMPROVE EXHAUST NOTE QUALITY.
